What Is A2P Messaging?

A2P stands for application-to-person: messages sent by software rather than typed by a human. If your business texts customers through a CRM or automation, you are sending A2P traffic.

Why carriers require registration

Carriers were flooded with unregistered automated spam. Registration ties business messaging to a verified organization, brand, and use case so legitimate traffic can be separated from abuse.

What registration involves

Your legal business name, EIN, address, website, and a description of what you will send, along with sample messages and your opt-in process. It is submitted for carrier review.

How long it takes

Typically several days to two weeks. This is why messaging systems are usually configured in the second week of an implementation rather than on day one.

What happens without it

Messages get filtered or blocked outright. You may see them as sent while customers never receive them, which is worse than not texting at all.

Staying compliant afterward

Identify your business in messages, honor opt-outs immediately, only text people who gave consent, and keep your content consistent with what you registered.
